Since the world start locking down earlier this year due to the global spread of COVID-19, over 6 million people have been infected and close to 400,000 have died from from causes related to the coronavirus. The world economy is experiencing a severe recession with economists predicting the highest unemployment rates since the Great Depression. Not even during the Great Depression and World War II did the bulk of economic activity literally shut down, as it has in China, the United States, and Europe today.
Since the start of the outbreak, Vietnam has closely monitored the situation and installed a series of proactive, comprehensive measures to combat the spread of the virus within the country and prepare its public health facilities. Past experience with other epidemics placed Vietnam in a strong position to protect its population as well as visitors passing through. The result: no deaths related to COVID-19.
As we reported late March, the children from The Center for Innocent Children in Bien Hoa, Vietnam were unable to go to school until recently while no visitors have been allowed to help protect the health of the children and staff. This turn of events has resulted in a significant drop in financial relief, as the center is dependent on the goodwill of its visitors. The $5,000 we provided so far has helped fund basic operations of the center. The money received has allowed Sister Vinh and her staff to worry less about the financial woes of their situation and dedicate more time to the well being of the children.
Despite all of the challenges in light of the current situation, we have seen continued support for our fundraising efforts. In fact, we have received close to $5,000 in donations in the last two month. This experience has left us humbled by the generosity of our donors and renewed our faith in the goodness of people, who continue to support the center despite their personal hardships.
On behalf of Sister Vinh, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude. By supporting The Center for Innocent Children, you are making the statement that despite being abandoned by their families or orphaned, these children deserve a decent childhood, an education, and a chance at a better life. Your willingness to help makes all the difference.
