Drape Dead Elegance: heritage in motion
The VANGUARD cover story Drape Dead Elegance centres on designer Smaranika “Nikki” Sarangi and a practice that connects science, heritage, and art. Trained first as a microbiologist and later in fashion design, Nikki approaches silhouette, symmetry, fabric weight, and movement with both analysis and intuition.
At Casa Nomada, a richly textured Odisha textile becomes sculptural through asymmetric draping and responsive styling. Handwoven by artisans from Nikki’s native Indian state, the fabric carries traditional knowledge into a contemporary editorial setting of raw walls, weathered doors, earth tones, and filtered light.
The garment changes with its wearer rather than obscuring her, expressing Nikki’s commitment to sustainability, cultural continuity, and design with meaning. The finished photographs honour the makers behind the cloth while showing how heritage can remain dynamic, personal, and globally relevant.
