Twenty Five Years
Created by Patrice Sciortino, composer, and Germaine Tocatlian, piano teacher at the Schola Cantorum, the FLAME Competition that has taken place every year since 1990 celebrated its 25th anniversary at the CCR of Paris from the 14th to the 20th of April, 2014.
The adventure started in 1989 when Patrice Sciortino and Germaine Tocatlian discussed ways of further supporting promising young musicians by providing them with opportunities to attend master-classes in the framework of the Sommerakademie of the Mozarteum in Salzburg and perform at concerts in France, Austria and Italy.
The first competition took place in 1990 at the Austrian Institute of Paris, thanks to the warm welcome of his director, Mr. Rudolf Altmuller. It gathered a total of thirteen pianists and rewarded three of them from France, Italy, and Spain. The competition was presided by Mrs. Gaby Casadesus, who also presided the following competitions until 1999, when she passed away.
2014 FLAME Competition
This year, over 300 candidates representing 40 countries participated in different disciplines: piano, violin, cello and singing. FLAME is grateful and most thankful to the candidates, the jury members, the winners and the many helpful friends and volunteers who contributed in making this 25th competition – and anniversary – a memorable event.
An international jury of 49 members (representing France, USA, Rumania, China, Russia, Austria, Luxembourg, Italy, Israel, Great Britain, Taïwan, Ukraine and Japan) was impressed by the quality of the performances and awarded numerous prizes which included concerts in France, Italy and Austria as well as master-classes at the Sommerakademie of the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria.
At the final concert an enthusiastic public of over 500 people heartily applauded the winners. A Grand Final concluded the festivities with the whole audience singing «Happy Birthday» led by Heng Shi (China) winner of FLAME 2008 competition. Prizes, rewards diplomas records and scores were distributed to the winners and candidates.
