My connection to Jay began unexpectedly, through one of his letters. In Melbourne, amid the early days of his project, I came across one of these notes. I was struck by its simplicity and warmth. Each letter he left in public spaces carried a message of kindness and understanding—a small act of connection in a disconnected world. Jay wasn’t just writing for the sake of it; he was reaching out, creating moments of empathy and shared experience for strangers.

Seeing the impact of Jay’s letters firsthand, I watched as people discovered them like treasures left along their path. These weren’t just random notes—they were personal invitations to connect, each one a reminder of the universal human need to feel understood. What Jay started as a quiet act became a movement of hope and resilience.

About Jay Ventress
Jay Ventress, the author and street artist behind Dear Stranger Press, has spent years traveling the world, leaving letters on everyday objects—trash cans, bus shelters, electric boxes, anything that holds a bit of tape—hoping to spark something in a passerby’s eye. Perhaps you’ve already encountered one of these letters, and if so, consider this a hello from a fellow wild spirit.
The letter project, called Dear Stranger, began in Melbourne, Australia, four years ago. Initially started to bring a moment of clarity to strangers (and to Jay) during the lockdown, this project has grown far beyond its origins.
Since those early days, Jay has managed to post five thousand letters across Europe, New York, and much of the UK. The project has appeared on the BBC, The Belgian Times, and many other news sources. Thousands of strangers have inspired Jay to keep going through rain, sun, and snow, sending messages warm enough to melt the coldest of hearts. Generous individuals from around the world have even helped translate these letters into Spanish, Polish, Albanian, German, and French, so that these messages can touch others in their native languages.
